Private enterprises with family governance are an important driving force for China’s rapid economic growth after the reform and opening up. Existing literature believes that the family governance model commonly adopted by private enterprises is a cultural phenomenon rooted in traditional rural society. This paper further explores the historical and agricultural origins behind this cultural interpretation. Based on the China Private Enterprise Survey data, this paper uses the proportion of rice planting area to measure rice farming practices, and examines its impact on the degree of family control of modern private enterprises and its mechanism. The study finds that historical rice farming practices can increase the degree of family control of modern private enterprises by strengthening family ties. This paper not only deepens the understanding of the cultural causes of family governance of private enterprises from the perspective of crop planting methods, but also has enlightenment significance for the governance and transformation and development of modern private enterprises.
