Co-authored Paper by Professor Xie E Published in Top Journal Management World

Recently, the collaborative research achievement Smart Health Care for the Elderly and Medical Expenses: Evidence from Smart Health Care for the Elderly Demonstration Bases by Professor Xie E and doctoral candidate Yang Yuqi from the School of Economics, Shandong University, was published in the 1st issue of 2025 of the top journal Management World.

China has entered a deeply aging society with a continuous rise in medical expenses. Can smart health care for the elderly, a new elderly care model under the "Internet + Medical Health" initiative, reduce medical expenses for the elderly and achieve medical burden reduction? To address this question, this paper constructs an overlapping generations (OLG) model and uses the multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) method to examine the impact of smart health care for the elderly on medical expenses. The study finds that the pilot policy of smart health care for the elderly has reduced the hospitalization probability of the elderly by 3.84%, and hospitalization expenses, outpatient expenses, total medical expenses, and out-of-pocket medical expenses by 31.26%, 57.65%, 63.91%, and 47.53% respectively. Mechanism analysis reveals that smart health care for the elderly reduces medical expenses by lowering transportation costs, strengthening chronic disease management, and increasing preventive exercise, but there is still room for improvement in promoting the development of "enjoyable elderly care". The conclusions of this paper provide useful references for actively responding to population aging and reducing the medical burden of the elderly.
