Topic:

A Belief-based Approach to Sibling Rivalry

Abstract:

We revisit Becker's sibling rivalry problem from a belief-based approach.Consider a family with n siblings. Each sibling is concerned about the parents'affection. The parents aim to reassure each of their children and address any potential feelings of jealousy or rivalry among the siblings. We ask for any profile of siblings’posterior beliefs,is there an information structure that can generate these beliefs? We completely characterize all feasible joint posterior beliefs from all information structures. The major ingredient of the proof is a decomposition of a belief feasibility problem into a reduced-formauction problem and a transportequation.Thisdecomposition allows the application of a measure-theoretic version of Border's theorem. We use this characterization result to solve the optimal persuasion schemes in the sibling rivalry problems with and without privacy-preserving constraints.
